Introgressive Hybridization in a Natural Population of Tradescantia.
نویسنده
چکیده
ETAILED analyses of populations containing natural hybrids have D been reported recently. ANDERSON (1936) has suggested a method for expressing quantitatively the extent of hybridity of a population and for comparing various populations, and this method has been applied to various genera such as Tradescantia (ANDERSON 1936) , Solidago (GOODWIN 1937), and Iris (RILEY 1938, 1939) The present paper reports a morphological and cytological study of a population of Tradescantia growing along a railroad right-of-way about fifteen miles east of the center of New Orleans, Louisiana. This population was more complex than most of the populations of that genus reported by ANDERSON and HUBRICHT (1938) for i t involved three species of which two were tetraploids and the third a diploid.

Evidence for adaptive introgression in plants
Natural interspecific hybridization has been observed in a diverse array of taxa [1-3], and the production of such hybrids can have a wide range of evolutionary consequences. For instance, natural hybridization can act as a ‘destructive’ force, resulting in the fusion of taxa that do not reveal strong reproductive isolation [1]. Alternatively, it can result in evolutionary novelty via the produ...
متن کاملEvidence of natural hybridization and introgression between Medicago ciliaris and Medicago intertexta
The present study, investigated some reproductive and fertility parameters in some wild populations, originating from the North Tunisia (4 populations of Medicago ciliaris and 3 populations of Medicago intertexta). Previous finding revealed that these species are genetically distinct and easily recognized by the number of flowers per inflorescence and pod dimensions. However, biometrical traits...
متن کاملAsymmetric Introgressive Hybridization Among Louisiana Iris Species
In this review, we discuss findings from studies carried out over the past 20+ years that document the occurrence of asymmetric introgressive hybridization in a plant clade. In particular, analyses of natural and experimental hybridization have demonstrated the consistent introgression of genes from Iris fulva into both Iris brevicaulis and Iris hexagona. Furthermore, our analyses have detected...
متن کاملNatural hybridization in primates: one evolutionary mechanism.
The role and importance of natural hybridization in the evolutionary histories of animal taxa is still debated. This results largely from a history of zoological investigations that assumed, rather than documented, a limited evolutionary role for this process. However, it is now becoming apparent that, just as for plants, the creative effects of reticulate evolution are widespread in animal tax...
متن کاملHybridization among Three Native North American Canis Species in a Region of Natural Sympatry
BACKGROUND Population densities of many species throughout the world are changing due to direct persecution as well as anthropogenic habitat modification. These changes may induce or increase the frequency of hybridization among taxa. If extensive, hybridization can threaten the genetic integrity or survival of endangered species. Three native species of the genus Canis, coyote (C. latrans), Me...
